As you probably know already, WordPress is one of the coolest and most powerful marketing tools available online nowadays. You can use it to create a personal blog, a business blog and, of course, your website to promote your products and affiliate products, as well.
The great thing about WordPress is that you can create all of the following in literally minutes without any knowledge of HTML or PHP. And another great thing about WordPress – it is search engine friendly and that, my friend, means that you can increase your search engine ranking.
Creating a WordPress site that is SEO ready is simple if you know how to do it correctly. Now, the question is »How to improve SEO?« Let me give you a hint
Using the following steps can help you create a great SEO site in no time.
1. Post titles
You have to make sure that your post titles are clearly written. There is no need to fill your post titles with keywords you use to target your website or blog. You should choose your keywords carefully and get the most importaint keywords of that post into your post title.
Example: If your post is a review about a product called »Extra Super Dupper Product«, the title of your post should be »Extra Super Dupper Product Review«.
You should also put links under your posts to other related posts on your website or blog. This is a simple way to help web crawlers that are crawling through your website to index all of your posts.
2. Autolinks
When you write a post, you can also cross link to your other posts and pages that are related to the post content by linking keywords to those relevant posts.
Example: Here’s an example of a autolink from one post to another related. It’s the first paragraph. Click here to see it. You see how the two posts are related?
3. Tags
Tags enable web crawlers to easily crawl through your website and therefore they’re a great addition to your website on a SEO standpoint. In addition, you will also be able to create specific pages for your tags and keywords.
Make sure you use relevant keywords for your tags.
For example, if your post is about planting roses, tags such as roses, gardening, planting roses etc. are relevant, but tags like rose postcards, tree planting etc. are not. This is importaint as you want your visitors to stay on your website, not leave immediately realizing that they have been deceived.
4. Categories
You can easily categorize your content with the Categories. If your Permalinks are turned on, the category names will appear in your URL. So, be really careful when choosing a category name. WordPress allows you to use sub categories and sub-subcategories, so you can make as many categories you can. This way you are able to down your focus on certain keyword phrases.
5. Permalinks
If you’re not using permalinks on your WordPress site, you should. The default permalink looks like http://yourwebsite.com/?p=123. These links are hard for the search engine web crawlers to attach themselves to and will slow down the process of indexing site.
WordPress has an option to create custom URLs for permalinks and archieves. Just go to your WordPress Administration Panel, scroll down and on the left side you will see the »Settings« and under that category click on »Permalinks«. You have 5 choices of permalinks to choose from – Default (http://yourdomain.com/?p=123), Day and name (http://yourdomain.com/yyyy/mm/dd/post-name), Month and name (http://yourdomain.com/yyyy/mm/post-name), Numeric (http://yourdomain.com/archives/123) and Custom.
Tip: If you would like to have your permalinks set like: http://yourdomain.com/post-name, choose Custom option and write in the following: /%postname%/
And don’t forget to click »Save Changes«.
5. Ping Services
Every time you edit a post or a page, your WordPress software will notify a variety of different sites that you have updated your blog. It is cruical that you use this step because search engines like to see regulary updated content. WordPress automatically notifies popular Update Services that you’ve updated your blog by sending a XML-RPC each time you create or update a post, but if you’re using a free web host, this might cause you a little problem (click here to read more).
6. Google Sitemaps
This is a great tool that will help you index your website. It also allows you to tell Google which pages on your website are the most importaint. You can access it here.

Jan 11, 11 at 4:39 pmGood job on this article Toffsy. Once quick point of clarification on WordPress’ auto ping functionality (point #5 above)… WordPress by default only sends out an alert when you add or edit posts. The same is not true for pages. So it’s good to link to new Pages from Posts to get your Pages spidered quickly.
Another difference between posts and pages in WordPress is that posts are automatically added by WordPress to your blog’s RSS feed, while pages are not. Nice article Toffsy!
